That first year I was in a testing grade so I learned all about the stresses of state standards and testing scores. You do everything you can to prepare your students for success but there is nothing you can do on that day but hope for the best!
My 2nd year of teaching, I moved to a new state so I had to get a new license. After job searching, which seemed like an endless hunt, I landed a position tutoring students in K-5. I was able to focus on small groups of children throughout the day. It was a great year for me, learning about each grade level and seeing where my heart wanted to be. After that year I was offered a position teaching 2nd grade and I landed in heaven.
You know when people say that you should love what you do because then going to work isn’t like a job, it’s just doing what fills your heart? That was me in 2nd grade. I fell in love with it. The age of the kids, the material I was teaching & the school I was working in. It was the dream job. I loved that my students already had their foundation for basic reading & math skills so I was able to help build on those to get them prepared for the following year where they’d be tested at the state level. I loved their yearning to learn, their desire to explore new things, but most of all I loved their innocent hearts. If there was ever a moment in my life where I knew that this was EXACTLY what I was supposed to be doing, that was it. I was confident as a teacher & thrived on trying to better myself as an educator, my students and my fellow coworkers.
You see, teaching is something indescribable. Yes it’s a job, but it’s so much more, it’s being a world changer every single day.
